Sadly, I must report the death of a dear friend, my beta fish Stephen Colbert.  I went to feed the little guy today and found him head down at the bottom of the bowl.  I’ve never had that much experience with pets.  Growing up, my brother was allergic to everything under the sun, including everything having fur, feathers, algae etc.  Our parents got us a dog for two days and my brother’s eyes swelled shut.  At the time my solution to the problem would have been to get rid of my bro and keep the puppy but the folks thought otherwise.

 Going on my experiences as a childhood fish owner, I acquired Stephen less then a year ago from a lonely shelf at Wal-Mart.  Actually maybe referencing my previous fish experiences doesn’t help my case.  Especially since I had a fish jump out of the tank and plummet to its death some five feet below, dropping from atop the dresser to the floor.

 So maybe I feed him too much/ too little?  Cleaned his bowl too little/ too much?  Maybe it’s because sometimes I would put my finger in the bowl and try to pet him?

‘Maybe he had cancer; I hear that everything can get cancer these days.’  If only I had taken him to a vet to get that checked out.  I’m pretty sure that vet would call me crazy and tell me to go get another one for $3.00. 

‘Umm actually he was $1.97.’
